Carpet Stool

2019

A material research project that focuses on recycling and finding a second life to a product with a long history and cultural significance.
By converting the carpet to a generic shaped stool, it will be able to return to it's former habitat in a new and refined way.

Various experiments with different carpets and sheets of Polypropylene

the process included testing different types of carpets, ones that are sensitive to heat and others that aren't, and combining them with different forms of Polypropylene.

After the carpet was cut to shape,
it was put into an iron at 190°C
The new material sheet was then put into a mold, giving it its structural integrity

"While most components that make up carpet are recyclable or reusable, only about 4 percent of waste carpet currently gets handled in these ways"
